Dog Days.

The next person to ask me why I am so ill-informed of current and worldly events need only refer to my local newspaper. Over my breakfast of cherry cola and rainbow-colored goldfish crackers, I sought to educate myself by clicking through the headlines. They consisted of It's Hot Outside, Everything is on Fire, and You're Not Allowed to Talk on Your Phone and Drive Anymore. I was up to speed on the first two, so I went for the last one. I learned nothing from the article that the headline didn't already suggest. The commentary section, however, provided a wealth of information. I present it to you, edited only slightly to fit your screen:

The law is not clear
I have been trying to find out if blind drivers are exempt from the new cell phone law. Years ago CalTrans put those raised dots on the roads to mark lanes and now it's easy to stay in my lane and it's simple for me to drive. So what more should I need? I have to use my cell phone while I drive to get directions.

Obviously, blind people are NOT exempt from this law. Haven't you ever seen the Braille dots at a bank ATM DRIVE THROUGH machine? Can they drive to a bank WITHOUT using the roads?

Why would a blind person be driving Bennie_Hill? You should be getting your directions before you start the car. You don't need a cell phone for that?

You asked, "Haven't you ever seen the Braille dots at a bank ATM DRIVE THROUGH machine?" No I haven't seen the braille dots at the bank, I am blind. My guide dog can see all the dots and by his barking I know where to turn. I don't think it's fair that blind drivers can't use their cell phones while driving, especially if they have their guide dogs with them.

Bennie_Hill - Call the DMV
I just called the DMV and they said you are NOT exempt from the new cell phone law. But they did say your guide dog can use your cell phone to get directions for you. You can also use your cell phone while driving thru the banks ATM lane.

Bennie Hill - Driving while being legally blind & cell phones
Who told you it was alright to drive being blind? Even with a guide dog you should not be driving and even more you should not be driving and using your cell phone to get directions. I don't believe you that your guide dog barks when you need to turn or stop. Was that you last week of highway 50 tapping away with your white cane in the fast lane?

my twist on hands-free
So I'm driving with my wife on Saturday, and I realize that I forgot my hands-free thingy. So my wife dials the phone for me and holds the phone to my ear while I drive with both hands? Does my wife qualify as a hands-free device?

provided that you also have a trained seeing eye dog next to her in the front seat to properly supervise her when she punchs in the numbers...woof woof = 2; woof woof woof woof woof woof = 6, etc.

I like the new ban
talking on the phone requires thought and emotion. Lets say you are talking to your girl friend and end up getting into a fight and your tone and anger raises to another level. How much attention do you actually have left to pay attention to the road? Eating on the road, you dont use any emotion or much thought. it doesnt talk crap about you or respond in anyway. all you do is just eat.

It should be noted that, according to her email address, one of these people is an actual DMV employee. And finally, I would like to declare that I am one out of two people who find the last comment helpful. It's true. Cheesy beefy melts do not talk crap about me to my knowledge.
